Sail Cape Cod's Outreach Program officially got under way on Saturday June 15th, with an outing in collaboration with one of our program partners, Cape Abilities (www.CapeAbilities.org ).
SCC hosted some residents from their group home program for a sail in Lewis Bay on SCC's daysailers (although one passenger was reticent about going aboard a 17' sailboat, so he gladly went out on volunteer Chuck Sabatt's Maritime Skiff for a nice motor cruise around the bay...).
Cape Abilities has over 50 clients between their Day and Resident programs who have expressed interested in participating this summer, and they also have a number of others with physical disabilities who would like to participate once we can secure adaptive equipment to accommodate disabled sailing (a goal of ours for 2014...).
We are currently working on collaborations with other local disabilities organizations as well: Community Connections, ARC of Cape Cod, LIFE Inc, and Kennedy-Donovan Center. We are also hosting outreach programs for groups representing at-risk youth and teens, as well as planning a Senior Day.
SCC's Outreach Program is rapidly becoming our hallmark program, and it is in the very capable hands of our Program Director, Bryony Scudder, who's background is in Early Education and Special Needs.
