COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS
An integral part of Sail Cape Cod’s mission is to provide recreational & therapeutic boating opportunities for those who may not otherwise be able to enjoy on-the-water experiences. Our Community Outreach programs are based on a collaborative effort between Sail Cape Cod and relevant non-profit organizations, area schools, local government, and the business community.
One group we focus on is underprivileged and at-risk youth, utilizing the sport of sailing to develop academic, leadership and life skills. We also provide adaptive programs to physically, intellectually and developmentally challenged individuals that are recreational, educational and therapeutic in nature.
These programs help individuals to achieve their full potential and to successfully integrate into their communities. Collectively, we hope to impart a sense of empowerment, belonging and self-worth to all participants.
Sail Cape Cod's Outreach Program has become its hallmark platform, and it is in the very capable hands of our Program Director, Coach Jim Hoar, whose professional background is in Education and Special Needs.
Our Outreach Program Partners
Sail Cape Cod partners with local disabilities organizations in hosting their clients from both resident and day programs for some recreational and therapeutic sails around Lewis Bay. Cape Abilities, Community Connections, Arc of Cape Cod, Sandpiper Club, LIFE Inc, Cape Cod Collaborative, Riverview School, Cape Cod Challenger Club and Independence Farm are among our current participating partners within the disabilities community.
We also partner with area schools and youth organizations like Cape Cod Collaborative in hosting programs for underprivileged and at-risk youth.
Sail Cape Cod is looking to expand its adaptive outreach program to include sailing opportunities for physically disabled individuals, both youth and adult. We are in the process of retrofitting a sailboat with adaptive equipment for disabled sailing, and the Town of Barnstable has allowed us to install a Hoyer lift at the Gary Brown Boat Ramp in order to board physically disabled passengers.
We also continue to seek out collaborations with local school programs, youth groups and other institutions that focus on at-risk and underprivileged youth.

“It is amazing how much he does and how wonderful people are that help others with disabilities of any type. It is a wonderful thing for the family to see the joy that he and others have doing things they may not know how to say they have done, but to see the joy on their faces is priceless.”
